Romeo and juliet characters
History records the name of the family Montague as being lent to such a political party in Verona , but that of the Capulets as from a Cremonese family, both of whom play out their conflict in Lombardy as a whole rather than within the confines of Verona. Usually, a woman was required to be modest and shy to make sure that her suitor was sincere, but breaking this rule serves to speed along the plot. This phrase seems to hint that the stars have predetermined the lovers' future. This paradox of imagery adds atmosphere to the moral dilemma facing the two lovers: loyalty to family or loyalty to love. Romeo and Benvolio, still discussing Rosaline, encounter the Capulet servant bearing the list of invitations. Lady Montague is the matriarch of the house of Montague. O heavy lightness, serious vanity, Misshapen chaos of well-seeming forms, Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health, Still-waking sleep, that is not what it is! Distraught, Juliet suddenly finds herself married to a man who has killed her kinsman. With the help of Friar Laurence , who hopes to reconcile the two families through their children's union, they are secretly married the next day. Juliet then awakens and, discovering that Romeo is dead, stabs herself with his dagger and joins him in death. He promises to send a letter to Romeo immediately, explaining the situation and asking him to return in time to be with Juliet when she awakes.
Before Mercutio's death in Act three, the play is largely a comedy. Benvolio counsels him to forget this woman and find another, more beautiful one, but Romeo remains despondent.
Romeo and juliet short summary
Writer and critic Samuel Johnson , however, considered it one of Shakespeare's "most pleasing" plays. If he ever returns to the city, he will be put to death. Capulet, misinterpreting Juliet's grief, agrees to marry her to Count Paris and threatens to disown her when she refuses to become Paris's "joyful bride". Mercutio is fatally wounded when Romeo attempts to break up the fight. At the party, he meets Juliet, only daughter of the Capulets, and not even knowing each other's names, they fall instantly in love. The formal language she uses around Paris, as well as the way she talks about him to her Nurse, show that her feelings clearly lie with Romeo. Capulet, for example, when he first discovers Juliet's faked death, describes it as having deflowered his daughter. Juliet has not yet considered marriage, but agrees to look at Paris during the feast to see if she thinks she could fall in love with him.
Juliet is anxious when Romeo is late to meet her and learns of the brawl, Tybalt's death, and Romeo's banishment. Most of Romeo and Juliet is, however, written in blank verseand much of it in strict iambic pentameterwith less rhythmic variation than in most of Shakespeare's later plays.
